Leadership & Management in Respiratory Medicine

Effective leadership and management skills are important attributes for all trainees to develop. As highlighted by the GMC:

Being a good doctor means more than simply being a good clinician. In their day-to-day role doctors can provide leadership to their colleagues and vision for the organisations in which they work and for the profession as a whole. However, unless doctors are willing to contribute to improving the quality of services and to speak up when things are wrong, patient care is likely to suffer.

Postgraduate Qualifications in Medical Leadership and Management

Several universities now offer a postgraduate certificate (PGCert), postgraduate diploma (PGDip) and masters (MSc/MA) in medical leadership, management and related fields. These can usually be undertaken on a part-time and flexible basis. Searching online will reveal a range of such courses, e.g Royal College of Physicians & Birkbeck, University of London – MSc in Medical Leadership.

Resources

The Respiratory and GIM curricula require trainees to demonstrate that they have been cultivating their leadership and management skills throughout the course of their training. Here, we provide links to relevant resources to help you to develop your understanding of these attributes and to gather evidence of your competencies in these domains.
