Medical Student Award 2021
Dr Alastair Watson of the University of Birmingham, was awarded the BTS Medical Student Award at the Winter Meeting 2021 for his work “Comprehensive multiomics analysis demonstrates surfactant dysregulation in COPD” (S90).
Dr Watson said: “I thoroughly enjoyed working on this exciting project with Professor Tom Wilkinson’s research group at the University of Southampton. I feel privileged and delighted to win this prize and excited to present at the BTS winter meeting”.
Alastair is now looking forward to his future career in clinical research.
Congratulations also are in order for the highly commended researcher Aditya Adiga of Birmingham University for the work “Prognostication in hospital acquired pneumonia – are current scoring systems fit for purpose? (S16)“ and Lakshya Sharma of Imperial College London, for the work “Iron Deficiency: complications, compensations and treatments by hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia molecular genotype”(S66)

The prestigious Medical Student Awards are highly competitive and are awarded to the very best basic, translational or clinical research performed in the UK respiratory community by Medical students. Qualifying projects can include clinical audit, quality improvement, systematic review writing or laboratory work.
