Clinical Grand Round results - BTS Summer Meeting 2021
The Clinical Grand Round (CGR), one of the highlights of the BTS Summer Meeting year after year, welcomes applications from all members of the respiratory team, specialist trainee or AHP, wherever they are based (however they are not open to post-CCT doctors). Entrants to to the competition must present a clinical case that can provide the audience with key learning points.
This year’s virtual edition of the Clinical Grand Round was the most popular ever, with 41 applications received, which where whittled down to the three finalists that presented their case live in front of the virtual audience of the Summer Meeting and a panel of experts.
It is with great pleasure that we can announce Dr Lydia Guhaniyogi, from University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, as the winner of this year’s edition of the CGR, with the talk titled “Pompe and circumstance: the diagnostic challenge of respiratory failure in patients post-COVID pneumonitis”.
I have always enjoyed the clinical ground round when I have previously attended and this year, the case that I have presented provided some useful learning points which I felt others could learn from too.
Being part of a final comprised of trainees from Wales was a privilege and it showcased some of the interesting patients and challenges encountered by those who undertake their training in Wales.

We would also extend our congratulations to the other two Highly Commended finalists Dr Michael Shiel, of Morriston Hospital, Swansea, with his case “Cardiac failure and asymmetrical effusions. To tap or not to tap?” and Dr Joy Creaser-Thomas, also of Morriston Hospital, Swansea, with “A rare cause of tracheal ulceration”.
I was delighted to have been selected as one of the three individuals to present at the meeting. I feel that the case I presented was interesting and worth sharing as I learnt a lot from it, and hopefully others will too.

To be a finalist in the clinical grand round was an honour. I looked forward to the opportunity to present an interesting and informative case to colleagues across the specialty on this large platform.
