BTS Medal 2019

The BTS Medal 2019 has been awarded to Professor Mike Morgan, for his continuing contributions to respiratory medicine, in the fields of education, clinical practice and national policy.

A former Chair of the British Thoracic Society, Professor Morgan is a consultant respiratory physician at the Department of Respiratory Medicine, Allergy and Thoracic Surgery at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust at Glenfield Hospital and Honorary Professor at the University of Leicester, having previously worked at Birmingham Heartlands and the Brompton Hospitals.

Before stepping down in 2019, Professor Morgan has also served as National Clinical Director for Respiratory Services by NHS England, in which role he was responsible for advising the government about respiratory care, including commissioning, quality and standards in England.

His career interests have included the assessment and management of respiratory disability particularly in COPD, where he has published widely and has a world-wide reputation. He was also an author of the BTS and ERS/ATS statements on pulmonary rehabilitation. He has inspired and supported members of the respiratory team in Leicester, developing services and individuals, and places the interest of patients at the heart of all of his work.

Always busy championing excellence in respiratory care, Professor Morgan is also a Vice President of the British Lung Foundation and editor of the journal Chronic Respiratory Disease. Previous roles saw him as Chair of the Asthma UK research committee, a member of the external reference group for the NICE COPD guidelines and of the COPD National Strategy.

The BTS Medal is awarded annually to a distinguished person who has greatly contributed to respiratory medicine or science. This prestigious award aims to acknowledge the recipient's leadership in and contribution to clinical and/or scientific work which has resulted in benefit to patients and the inspiration of peers.
