Call for group members: Task and Finish Group: BTS Sustainability Toolkit for Respiratory Professionals

Closing date: 5pm, Monday 7 October 2024. Apply here.

Following the publication of the BTS Position Statement on Sustainability and Environment: Climate Change and Lung Health, the BTS Board of Trustees has agreed that a new Sustainability Toolkit should be produced.  To help develop the Toolkit we are looking to recruit a Task and Finish Group from across the BTS Membership

It is hoped the Toolkit will provide a valuable resource that will enable respiratory clinicians to develop their knowledge of environmental issues and support the development of respiratory treatments and services that can prevent and mitigate the harmful effects of climate change. The toolkit will aim to bring together existing relevant information as well as develop new resources.

The toolkit will aim to equip healthcare professionals to:

  • measure and reduce the environmental impacts of everyday respiratory practices in their workplace while maintaining or improving standards of patient care

  • apply the principles of sustainable healthcare to respiratory care to maximise environmental, social and financial value, and identify co-benefits in the form of carbon savings, cost savings, improved efficiency (e.g. staff time, resource use) and/or increased wellbeing

  • boost engagement amongst colleagues interested in playing an active part in addressing the climate, environmental and healthcare emergency

The group will be chaired by the BTS Sustainability Trustee, Dr LJ Smith, and we are seeking volunteers from the following members of the respiratory team:

  • Respiratory Consultants

  • Respiratory Trainees

  • Respiratory Nurses

  • Allied Health Professionals

It is intended that the group will meet no more than twice (as hybrid meetings at BTS Head Office and via Teams) with the remaining work completed by email.  The intention will be to finalise the Toolkit by summer 2025.

To apply, please provide a copy of a short CV and supporting statement via the online application form here.
