Pulmonary Vascular Disease 2025

The course will appeal primarily to Specialist Trainees and Consultants in Respiratory Medicine and will cover the whole spectrum of diseases affecting the pulmonary vasculature.  The talks will use a case-based approach to place recent literature within a clinical context. 

Pulmonary Hypertension: 

  • Be aware of varied causes of pulmonary hypertension and be competent in the interpretation of investigations including echocardiography, imaging data (including CT, MRI, perfusion scintigraphy) and right heart catheterisation. 

  • Be aware of the varied presentation of pulmonary hypertension and how to approach the initial assessment of a patient with suspected pulmonary hypertension. 

  • Understand the different therapies (medical and surgical) used to treat pulmonary hypertension and the indications for their use. 

  • Be competent in the management of severe pulmonary hypertension for the Specialist Trainee exit exam in Respiratory Medicine and test knowledge with ‘mock exam‘ questions. 

Pulmonary Embolism: 

  • To understand the importance of risk stratification in the assessment and management of acute PE. 

  • To understand the indications and methods of reperfusion in acute PE. 

  • Be aware of data supporting outpatient management of acute PE and of the issues to be addressed in setting up a service. 

  • Be aware of issues to be covered in following patients after an acute PE including malignancy screening, duration and method of anticoagulation and how to approach the patient with persistent breathlessness. 

Pulmonary AVM: 

  • Be competent in the diagnosis and management of pulmonary arteriovenous malformations including issues related to screening for associated HHT and for other organ involvement. 

Pulmonary Vasculitis: 

  • Understand diagnosis and management of pulmonary vasculitis.
